Our Process

The Bennett Thermal Oxidizer is a fourth generation product, the result of over fifteen years of research and testing. The equipment consists of a rotary kiln primary combustion chamber, a secondary combustion chamber (afterburner) and an air emission control unit consisting of an evaporative cooling tower, a dry scrubber system, a fabric filter and an emission stack.

Production Rate

The Bennett system at the Récupère Sol Treatment Facility is currently permitted to handle up to 10 tonnes of material per hour, depending on the type of material, the contaminants, its BTU content and moisture level.

Process Overview

The primary combustion chamber operates at 650 to 800ºC. In this chamber, all organic molecules are vaporized.
This gas enters the secondary combustion chamber where air and fuel is injected and complete oxidation occurs at >1,000ºC.
A control system monitors and regulates the process for purposes of safety and maximizing oxidation efficiency.

Efficiency

To upgrade the initial permit, a triplicate test burn for soil contaminated with PCBs was completed at the RSI Plant in August 1997. Measured destruction removal efficiency (DRE) was >99.99999% (the minimum required is 99.9999%). The combustion efficiency (CE) was >99.99985% (the minimum required is 99.9%).

Subsequent annual testburns confirm the continued, better than requirements, process destruction and removal efficiency. Testing on treated soil resulted in organic contaminant concentrations that were either non-detectable or were at the detection limit for organics. These test results confirm the high standard performance of the Bennett Thermal Oxidizer.

Material Storage, Preparation and Feed System
  • to ensure that the input material is of the correct size and appropriate blend for smooth and continuous operation. The material is stored on lined concrete pads, in an indoor storage facility. Air is drawn out of the storage area, and released to the atmosphere through filters. Material is sized by screening and crushing as required;

  • Primary Combustion Chamber
  • organic material in the soil matrix is vaporized and oxidized so that only clean soil leaves the system. (Treated soil will typically have a non-detectable level of organics);

  • Secondary Combustion Chamber (afterburner)
  • destroys any organic molecule carryover from the Primary Combustion Chamber;

  • Air Emission Control Module
  • cleans the gases exiting the thermal system, and ensures that the unit is in full compliance with air emission requirements.

    Upon completion of treatment, Bennett provides the client with a Certificate of Destruction absolving them of any further liability.
    Our thermal treatment process is the Best Demonstrated Available Technology and a cost-effective option for the remediation of contaminated sites.
