Christopher Hugh, P.Eng., Acoustics & Vibration - Specialist

Education:
B.E.Sc., Mechanical Engineering, University of Western Ontario, 1979

Professional Affiliations:
Member of the Canadian Acoustical Association
Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario Association
Associate Editor of the Canadian Acoustics Journal
Vibration Specialist Level II (Vibration Institute)

Summary of Experience:
Extensive noise and vibration consulting and design expertise with the electrical power and steel industries. Detailed design and evaluation of noise and vibration control systems for steel, power, and metallurgical plants. Specification and development of noise and vibration standards for purchase of new equipment. Practical experience with the application of acoustic intensity techniques, and the measurement of noise in ducts with high velocity and/or high temperature flows. Practical experience with machine vibration condition monitoring and diagnostics, and the measurement of human vibration exposure in industrial plants, mobile equipment and cranes. Previously trained to Orange Badge level for nuclear plant radiation safety, and familiar with sound and vibration measurements in radiation zones.

Relevant Experience:
Dofasco, No4 Ore Bridge. Measured and evaluated cab vibrations in order to quantify sources of high vibrations which generated complaints by the bridge operators.

Noranda. Brunswick Mines. Performed extensive baseline vibration measurements of mine plant to quantify degree of human vibration exposure. The vibration levels were used by the company to evaluate a compensation claim by a former employee.

QIT. UGS Project. Lead acoustics specialist to the project. Provided detailed design expertise for 11 large custom acoustic enclosures, specifications for all silencers and noise controls for the project to meet an 85dBA indoor noise limit and a 35dBA outdoor noise limit. Prepared acoustic reports for submission to the Quebec Environment Ministry.

MMI, Magnola Project. Conducted and evaluated long term automatic noise monitoring of the ambient noise levels on the lands around the project.

Ontario Hydro. Darlington Generating Station. Performed an entire station noise survey to rank and prioritize all the noise sources in the station.

Ontario Hydro. Lennox generating station. Monitored and identified source of noise in community after receipt of complaints from residents. Proposed retrofit noise controls, and predicted noise levels for MOEE Certificate of Approval. Field inspected the installation of large silencers and developed method to measure silencer insertion loss in the presence of high speed airflow.

Ontario Hydro. Project Manager of noise control engineering to implement extensive retrofit noise controls at a major power station. Designed, evaluated and coordinated engineering and construction efforts for the reduction of noise from: 500MW turbine generator, flame detector, cooling fans, condensate extraction pumps, boiler feed pump, coal pulverizers, primary air fan, powerhouse ventilation fans, compressors, valves, and pipes.

Career History:
1995 - present Hatch, Specialist, Acoustics and Vibration
1989 - 1995 Ontario Hydro, Design Engineer Specialist
1979-1989 Stelco Inc., Staff Specialist, Sound and Vibration Control
