Saglek – Project Management
In accepting the Saglek contract, Bennett also accepted the responsibility for hiring and training as man members of the Inuit community as well. In the end, more than half the workforce on the project were Inuit ranging from bear watchers to heavy equipment operators. Some of those selected had never been employed in a modern industry. As the project nears completion, several Inuit workers have found jobs at a new nickel mine on the Labrador coast as a result of the training provided by Bennett Environmental. We are just as proud of our contribution to developing the skills of the local people as we are of our handling of the contaminated soil. Those skills will serve to improve and sustain not only the individuals involved but also the entire community. Now the Inuit, through a land claims settlement, will take over the region. Its Inuit name has been translated as “This Beautiful Land.”
